چکیده:

The unique functions of mobile phones such as text-messaging, Internet access, voice-messaging, cameras, and even video-recording have rendered them one of the most widely used technical communication devices (Chinnery, 2006). Short Message Service (SMS) is a text messaging service of mobile communication systems that enables people to exchange short text messages between fixed lines or mobile phone devices by means of standardized communication protocols. The purpose of the present study was to examine the frequency, syntactic category, and sociolinguistic functions of Persian- English code-mixing in mobile text messages sent by a group of Iranian EFL learners. Besides, the study examined two sociolinguistic factors, i.e. gender and linguistic background, influencing the participants’ code-mixing. The corpus was collected from 50 postgraduate English Majors, 24 male and 26 female, studying at two universities in Iran. The participants were also divided into two groups based on their linguistic background, 27 Persian L1 speakers and 23 Turkish L1 speakers. A total of 583 text messages were gathered from the participants. About 183 text messages were eliminated from the corpus due to various reasons. Overall, there was an equal number of text messages from male and female participants. To collect the needed data a mixed- method approach was followed in this study. All the participants filled in a language use and language attitude questionnaire and out of each group, six participants were randomly selected to take part in semi-structured interviews. The results of qualitative and quantitative analyses indicated that Iranian EFL learners use code-mixing quite frequently in their text messages, and the percentage of code-mixing was higher in some syntactic categories such as single nouns and verbs than other categories like phrases and clauses. However, quantitative data revealed that there were some differences among participants according to their gender and linguistic background. Moreover, it was found that the participants used code-mixing structures to fulfill a number of sociolinguistic functions. Possible pedagogical implications of the study will be discussed.
